This week celebrates baby wearing! Several of my mom friends have made some great posts about baby wearing, and I'd invite you to visit their blogs: Tophat, Mommy Bee, and Alisa. They've covered all the bases, so I'd like to focus your attention elsewhere: Motrin.
Yes, you read that right. Motrin has put up a short audio clip on their home page as part of their "We Feel Your Pain" campaign. This audio clip consists of a Mom talking about how baby wearing is a fad, may or may not be beneficial to the baby, and makes her look like an "official mom." And while this causes her significant pain (for which she must, of course, take Motrin), she does it for the sake of her kids. I guess? Ugh.
The monologue goes like this: (thanks to this blogger for transcribing the ad)
Wearing your baby seems to be in fashion.
I mean, in theory it’s a great idea.
There’s the front baby carrier, sling, schwing, wrap, pouch.
And who knows what else they’ve come up with. Wear your baby on your side, your front, go hands free.
Supposedly, it’s a real bonding experience.
They say that babies carried close to the bod tend to cry less than others.
But what about me? Do moms that wear their babies cry more than those who don’t?
I sure do!
These things put a ton of strain on your back, your neck, your shoulders. Did I mention your back?!
I mean, I’ll put up with the pain because it’s a good kind of pain; it’s for my kid.
Plus, it totally makes me look like an official mom.
And so if I look tired and crazy, people will understand why.
If this disgusts you as much as it does me, please click here to email Motrin's customer service and DEMAND that they stop maligning baby wearing. New mothers, and mothers new to baby wearing, may see this ad and be turned off from a perfectly viable, comfortable, and loving method of carrying their babies while doing chores, running errands, and tending to other children. Support baby wearing by telling Motrin to discontinue this ad immediately!
Motrin and Tylenol are both made by Johnson & Johnson. Several moms are suggesting to boycott J&J entirely. Buy generic! Also, you can follow my Twitter to get more updates.
Here's Skimbaco's video response: Watch for me and the girls!
**ETA** If you have written a blog post or posted a video response to the Motrin ad, leave a comment and I'll link you.

**ETA x2** Motrin has removed the ad and put in its place an apology. Kudos to the hard-working mommy bloggers and twitters (twitterers?) who got the word out and shut it down! Note to Motrin: know your target audience before you target them.

As of right now, I have thrown out all Motrin products I have and will boycott them! I'm also going to share this in some of the groups we are in.
Thanks for acting so quickly to get the word out. I posted about this to and have linked to you:

I am so tired of being marginalized by the media and PR companies who only see "dumb" moms as air heads.
This is the message I left for Motrin:
I just want to express how disappointed I am with the anti-baby wearing ad that you have on your website. As a long time baby AND toddler/pre school wearer, I do not consider it to be a strain or to make me look like a "official mom". I do this not only for my children's comfort, but also for mine! And it's not "supposedly a great bonding expierence", it IS! My babies are babies only once and I want to make good memories with them. It's also not a fashion statement. Baby wearing has been around since the beginning of time,...yeah some trend THAT is! Because of this ad, I will no longer be buying Motrin and I will be sure to tell all my trendy, baby wearing friends about this ad as well. This was highly offensive and rude.
